Impressive vintage Mexican silver brooch featuring a crisply carved glossy black onyx face in a stylized Pre-Columbian mask design! The sharply defined brows, eyes, nose and mouth create a powerful geometric face framed by twisted silver wire and striking graduated ballwork.
This is a larger, substantial example measuring just over 2.5 inches long and weighing just over 38 grams. Its substantial construction, crisp onyx carving, unusual ballwork and applied maker’s mark distinguish it from many smaller and more simply constructed Mexican mask brooches.
The reverse is stamped SILVER MEXICO and bears an unidentified applied maker’s mark. Finished with a locking pin clasp.
A lack of eagle mark dates this to between the 1920s - 40s. We would place this item in the 1940s.
